When I first felt the call to write my book The Healing Journey: Navigating Adult ADHD and PMDD, I was terrified. Who was I to write a book? Would anyone even want to read it? And how on earth would I get published?
But deep down, I knew I had to share my story. My struggles, my healing journey, and the remedies that helped me could save someone else from years of suffering in silence. That thought kept me moving forward, even when fear told me to stop.
Why I Chose Self-Publishing
Like many first-time authors, I thought I needed a publishing deal for my book to be “legitimate.” But waiting for permission didn’t feel right. I didn’t want to hand over control of my story, my words, and my vision to someone else.
So, I chose a different path.
Self-publishing gave me:
Creative control – from the cover design to the interior layout.
Ownership of my story – no edits that diluted my message.
Global reach – my book is now available worldwide.
Royalties – I earn directly from each copy sold.
It was more work, yes, but it was also more empowering.
The Process I Followed
Here’s the exact process I used to bring my book to life:
1. Writing the Manuscript
This was the longest and most emotional part. I poured my story onto the page—the highs, the lows, the lessons, and the holistic practices that changed my life.
2. Editing
I worked with an editor to polish the manuscript. A fresh set of eyes made all the difference in catching inconsistencies and improving flow.
3. Design & Layout
I designed both the book cover and the interior layout myself. It was a creative process that made the book feel truly mine.
4. Publishing Platforms
I chose two self-publishing tools:
Amazon KDP – for print-on-demand and Kindle distribution.
Ingram Spark – for wider global distribution to bookstores and libraries.
These platforms made my book available worldwide without the need to order huge amounts of inventory.
5. Launch & Marketing
I shared my journey openly on Instagram, through email, and with my community. By letting people into the behind-the-scenes process, the book launch became a celebration we experienced together.
The Result
Today, The Healing Journey is available around the world. I get messages from women who tell me my words helped them feel less alone, more hopeful, and more equipped to manage ADHD and PMDD.
And every time I see a copy of my book in someone’s hands, I’m reminded of the decision that started it all: I didn’t wait for a publisher’s permission—I gave myself permission.
Thinking of Writing a Book?
If you’ve ever dreamed of writing a book, here’s my advice: don’t wait.
You don’t need someone else’s approval to share your story. The tools and platforms exist for you to do it yourself—on your own terms.
Your story could be the lifeline someone else desperately needs.
So start writing. One page at a time.
And if you’d like me to share the exact step-by-step process I used (and the tools I recommend), drop me a comment or message—I’d love to help.
